The Naked and The Infamous
“I cannot stand this stupidity, Boris. We must say something.”
“You fool. Truth is not a ruble we can afford to spend. There is no percentage in offering it. He would easily…EASILY…pull out your tongue and feed it to his horse. So do your job. Wake him, Dress him, should he permit, and stay silent.”
Boris is right of course. I will heed his words. The Master brooks no facts, no opinions. Nothing but his truth.
I worry that someday I may misspeak, utter a comment that should not even be thought.
I can not think in his presence.
I am an automaton.
I have my function.
My duty is to him.
And to my family.
I need to survive.
This is so wearying.
I enter his chamber.
He snores like the rumbling Donetsk coal trains of my youth.
Perhaps they still run.
Or did until…best not dwell on that.
He has tossed his blankets off onto the carpet in the night.
He does not sleep well.
I think that but I do not know.
The truth is I like to think that he struggles in the night. If I were him I would.
The truth is also that I am not like him.
And I do not sleep well.
My body aches with the pressure to survive, to keep secrets, to not think, to not make any mistakes, especially near him.
He is well preserved. His skin almost glistens.
His eyes open.
He sees me.
He glances towards the heavy curtains.
I open them.
The sun pours in.
He glows in its brilliance.
I cower in my cowardly shame.
