Jada Tyler sighed, aborting yet another attempt to talk to her daughter. The lights in Toni Tyler’s room were dim, the sun had long set, but neither woman was sleepy. They needed to talk about this. Jada braced herself for another try.

“Are you sure you’re okay, baby girl?”

The twenty-year-old prodigy winced her best approximation of a smile over her left arm sling.

“I told you, mom, I’m fine!”

Jada shook her head.

“You made those drones you were flying around on, probably from scratch, even made them so they’d keep fighting without you, saved all of our lives, but all you wore to protect yourself was motorcycle gear?”

“Ballistic motorcycle gear. The bullet didn’t even penetrate.”

Jada lowered her voice wearily, “Why didn’t you tell me what you were up to?”

Toni sighed sadly, “I didn’t want you to worry. Samuel Smith’s in custody so, if it would help, I can promise I’ll never do anything like that again.”

“That would make it worse,” Jada saw the reservation in her daughter’s eyes and squeezed her right hand reassuringly. “You’ve got too much of your father in you. If he’d had a way to be a superhero, instead of only supporting them, you know he’d have been out there every night.”

“Mom…”

Tears welled in Toni’s eyes, and she allowed herself to cry in front of Jada for the first time since her father was gunned down. Jada kissed Toni’s forehead tenderly.

“But you’ve got to promise me you’ll try to make it back for dinner as often as possible and that you’ll put that big brain of yours to work on a better way to protect yourself out there.”

Toni laughed and wiped her eyes with her right hand.

“I did have some ideas for that.”
