October, particularly the 31st, had always been Kerri’s mother’s favorite time of year. Not Kerri’s. Today was her first Halloween without her mother. She hadn’t had time to reflect on her loss yet, but her mom’s menagerie had picked tonight for the memorial.

The White Mansion sat on a broad flat-topped hill that cast an ominous shadow over the city each sunset. Kerri noticed the unusual haze over the vacant portion of the summit while tending the garden in the morning but didn’t investigate.

Around noon, Kerri finally had time to feel sorry for herself. Inheriting the cursed estate at 13 killed her dreams of getting out and moving away. Today was the one day some kids from town would dare one another into approaching the old mansion. One or two would probably even touch the door. But they’d run screaming before Kerri had any chance of making a friend. None of the creeps or creatures were friend material either. They were all either too old or too inhuman.

The haze was starting to resemble Kerri’s house.

By sunset, the wrap-around porch was decorated with jack-o-lanterns, spider webs, and a cauldron of fog potion for a memorial service Kerri had to admit her mother would have loved. But her attention was on the mirror image of her mansion casting just as strong a shadow as the real thing. A black-haired girl in a white slip emerged and skipped lightly over to Kerri’s porch, wide dark eyes admiring everything.

“Hello, my name’s Mirro. I love your house, I hope you don’t mind my copying it?”

Mirro appeared slightly younger than Kerri and not at all perturbed by the mourning monsters. Kerri extended a hand.

“I’m Kerri, nice to meet you.”

“You have lovely hands.”

Mirro’s grip was surprisingly sharp.
