“Please tell me I don’t have to dance,” he hissed to Ben, walking a half pace back from his elbow as they headed for the ballroom.

“No dancing for you, Highness.” Ben chuckled. “Far too hazardous, given the current political unrest.”

Liveried guards bowed their heads and pulled the double doors to the ballroom wide as they approached. Liam took in the spectacle revealed before them. He’d never seen a gathering so glittery and conspicuously wealthy outside a movie.

“What, like someone here is behind the assassinations?”

Before Liam could laugh at the idea one of these pampered lords or ladies had orchestrated the deaths of twenty-four members of the royal family, Ben’s hand brushed the small of his back as they stepped into the ballroom.

“Of course they are.”

He darted a look at Ben that surely hovered between polite interest and wild-eyed panic.

“And so we held a masquerade?”

“Keep your enemies close, Highness.”

“With black tie couture and an open bar?”

“Don’t forget the masks.”

“This is the dumbest fucking ide—”

“His Royal Highness, Crown Prince Liam.”

Five hundred pairs of eyes turned at the announcement, watching as he made his way to the throne. Expressions ranged from bored to friendly, from curious to hostile. No doubt every one of them wondered if he would fly or fall.

He didn’t twitch.

He didn’t run.

He put on a warm smile and walked. Like he could always do two things at the same time without disaster. Ben stayed close, the rest of his security team ranged around them.

Something felt… off. Or maybe Liam was just paranoid.

He hesitated at the throne. One last chance to speak before facing the ballroom.

“Am I going to die at a fancy party, Ben?”

“Only if I die first, Highness.”
