Sup sup! Over the weekend I dug out a book of writing prompts and decided to try jotting something down. As tends to happen, I stumbled upon a prompt that pulled a couple of characters out of the corner of my brain where they hang out when I’m not working with them.
So, say hello to Enid and Arius again! The prompt book gave me the first couple of sentences (in bold), and then the rest is me.
Perhaps it was a dream, she thought. Perhaps if she pinched herself, she would wake up. But she didn’t want to wake up. She wanted to stay in this dream world where Arius was still there, still holding her as she tried to sleep. But she knew she’d have to wake up eventually. That as much as Arius wanted to stay with her, he had his duties to return to.
No rest for Death, after all.
“Tell me what you’re thinking.” His voice ran deep, soothing. It vibrated straight from his chest – where Enid’s head rested – to her core.
“I just wish you didn’t have to leave.”
In response, his arm tightened around her. One of his hands traced along her arm, until it stopped at her hand. He laced their fingers together, bringing her knuckles up to his lips. Eyes closed, he held them there and murmured against her skin, “Me too.”
The intimacy of the gesture triggered a bout of butterflies in her stomach. They’d been doing this for months now, and yet she didn’t think she’d ever get used to his touch. Or bored of it.
“But I’ll come back.” He sat up, bringing her up with him. “As long as you’ll have me, I’ll keep coming back.” Arius cupped her face in one hand, pulling her in for a chaste kiss.
Enid wasted no time in reciprocating, pulling herself in closer, tucked into his chest. She’d never let another chance to kiss him back pass her by again. The kiss deepened, and Enid swore she’d float away if not for him keeping her grounded.
Breathless, she broke away from the kiss, her eyes locking on his. “You promise?”
“I swear.”
I did promise some semi-domestic bliss, though I’m not quite sure what domestic looks like when one half of the couple is Death incarnate. Anyway, hope you enjoyed the snippet!
As always, keep on keeping on 🙂
