And so we’ve reached the last Sunday of the year!
If you’ve stuck around, you’ll notice I started up my book reviews again, in an attempt to make my reading goals. While I might not have made it to the 52 books I wanted, I did come pretty close! It’s been a long time since I’ve read so many books in one year, and to commemorate my dive back into obsession-fueled reading, I’ve decided to do a top ten of the books I’ve read this year.
My Top Ten Books (in the order they were read, linked to my reviews):
- Wintersong by S.Jae-Jones
- The Near Witch by V.E. Schwab
- Una obsesión perversa (Vicious) by V.E. Schwab
- Westside by W.M. Akers
- Spin the Dawn by Elizabeth Lim
- This is How You Lose the Time War by Amal El-Mohtar & Max Gladstone
- Gods of Jade and Shadow by Silvia Moreno-Garcia
- Hollow Kingdom by Kira Jane Buxton
- House of Salt and Sorrows by Erin A. Craig
- Dahlia Black by Keith Thomas
I put them in the order I read them, because I’m straight-up terrible at ranking books in any meaningful way.
Plus, I can’t possibly pick an overall favorite. I’m sure I’m not alone in this struggle.
I will say, though, that my most memorable read of the year was Hollow Kingdom by Kira Jane Buxton. It made me laugh, made me cry, and was just all around supremely enjoyable and probably the one I’ll be recommending the most. Not to mention I had a really fun interaction with the author on Twitter and Instagram!
I’ve learned a lot about myself by diving head-first into the kind of obsessive reading I haven’t done since middle school. For one, I really enjoy audio books, though none of the audio books I listened to made the top ten list. Still, it’s a way of enjoying books I’ve only recently started to really get into, and I’ve found I love how relaxing it is to go for a walk with my dog or go about my chores with a book instead of music in the background. Not to mention the kind of dimension and depth incredible voice acting/narration lends to a story.
Coming up with this list was much harder than I would have liked, but that just goes to show that it’s been a great reading year! Here’s hoping 2020 holds as many awesome reads as 2019 did.
Happy New Year!
